comic: Captain Marvel

A character who caused controversy back in the 40's when his resemblance to Superman éxitoy could not go unnoticed, and since 1941 National Comics, now DC, started taking legal action against Fawcett Comics but among the legal bickering, the case came to trial until 1948. In this process it was noted that the character had much resemblance to Superman, so in argument and physically, but the court ruling was in favor of Fawcett, for DC Comics was detected that had not registered their rights to Superman properly in some publications, and this irregularity had no interest from DC to protect their rights . DC Comics, as expected, this descision appeal, and in 1952 the famous judge of the Supreme Court of the United States of America, Billings Learned Hand ruled in favor of DC Comics, Captain Marvel determining that clearly violated the copyright .

Before the court determines that legal action would take place, and since the comic industry was going through a strong period of crisis, Fawcett decided to settle with DC out of court, pay 400.000 dollars and canceling all Captain Marvel related titles. Whiz Comics came up to number 146, Captain Marvel Adventures 150 and ended in the Marvel Family in 89.

Years passed and Captain Marvel was gradually being forgotten, until suddenly a new comic boom, known as the Silver Age, it awoke from its slumber, and in 1973, now published by DC Comics (Fawcett DC and negotiated a "license"), came to light SHAZAM # 1, written by Dennis O'Neil and drawn by the artist who created it, CC Beck. This number, in addition to reintroduce the character to a new era, marked the first official home in which they appear together on Captain Marvel and the Last Son of Krypton, but lasted only 35 numbers.

is important to note that DC Comics decided to put the title SHAZAM, instead of Captain Marvel, to avoid legal issues with Marvel Comics, which by this time had already been a character with this name. Descision is likely to have influenced many readers, and since then Captain Marvel is known more for SHAZAM. Finally, in 1980, DC Comics was left with all the rights of the Fawcett characters and fit them into their land in a parallel universe known as Earth S. Earth

S merged with the rest of the DC Universe and now the classic story entitled Crisis on Infinite Earths, and from 1986 inhabits the same world Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, and like them, was given a new source to modernize it and to have a continuity consistent with all other superheroes; story was told in the '87 miniseries, Shazam! The New Beginning, which was written by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Tom Mandrake.

After this miniseries, Captain Marvel had sporadically any appearance in the Justice League or in another title, but there was nothing concrete. It was not until 1994 that a great personality in the world of comics, and apparently a fan of Captain Marvel, Jerry Ordway, who finally break the character in the mini-series "Power of Shazam, illustrated and written by him. I enjoy much acceptance, which soon became a regular series, which could reintroduce Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr. and, quite incredibly, even Hoppy the Marvel Bunny.

was also around this time that Mark Waid and Alex Ross wrote and illustrated one of the most important works of the comic in the '90s, Kingdom Come, where Billy Batson, Captain Marvel, plays an important role in history.

this time of great fame was held in March 1999, when Power of Shazam was canceled. But if anything we have seen in this post and countless opinions about this character is that Captain Marvel is a hero that although faced with lawyers, cancellations and even against Superman, has not able to be defeated, and most likely is that we have Captain Marvel for a while.
